Lieutenant Colonel, US Marine Corps

Lieutenant Colonel Thomas James Duff is the US Marine Corps' 2024-2025 Fellow at MIT's Security Studies Program. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 2004. Upon completion of The Basic School, he reported to Flight School in Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in August 2006. In July 2021, Lieutenant Colonel Duff reported to MAG-39 and assumed command of the HMLA-169 Vipers in January 2022. In April 2023, he deployed the squadron to Okinawa, Japan in support of the Unit Deployment Program. 

Prior assignments include deployment with HMLA-169 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Squadron Weapons and Tactics Insturctor and Aviation Safety Officer, MAWTS-1 Aviation Safety Officer, Tactical Reconnaissance and Unmanned Aerial Systems Specialist, and H-1 Subject Matter Expert.
