The Jack Ruina Nuclear Age Talk 2009 | Hans Blix

Dr. Hans Blix is the former head of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification, and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) from January 2000 to June 2003 and former Chairman of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission. He was Head of Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sweden from 1963 to 1976. He served as a member of the Swedish delegation to theUnited Nations General Assembly from 1961 to 1981. In 1976, he became Under Secretary of State at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in charge of international development cooperation. He was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in October 1978 amd served until 1979. He was the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General from 1981 to 1997. 

The Security Studies Program hosted the first annual Ruina Nuclear Age dinner on November 12, 2009. The dinner series was endowed by Professor Jack Ruina, MIT Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and former Director of the MIT Security Studies Program. The dinner features a prominent speaker to present on one of Professor RUina's major professional interests: nuclear weapons strategy and policy. 

The guest for the 2009 Ruina Dinner was Dr. Hans Blix, former head of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification, and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC). He spoke on "The Future of Nuclear Weapons."
